The son of a farmer in Hatherleigh, UK has been incarcerated for having constructed an enormous underground cannabis farm concealed beneath the concrete floor of a barn on a 200-acre estate.

Forty-year-old Daniel Palmer teamed up with an experienced cannabis cultivator to produce a massive amount of plants in a series of five connected shipping containers, buried deep within the soil on the rural property.

Palmer built the factory by constructing a large barn on top of the hidden grow, complete with a full hydroponic setup and ventilated by strong fans. The barn was finished with a thick, poured concrete floor, with the only means of entrance being through a small trapdoor concealed by a few bags of fertilizer strewn on top. The cables running to the generator were the only indication of what lay beneath.

Despite claiming in court that he was ignorant of the facility and that the parcel of his father’s land with the hidden factory had been rented by another man, Palmer’s DNA was found inside the grow area. He claimed that it was likely because he had touched the objects before they were installed underground.

“It goes without saying that the excavation work to dig out and remove enough soil to sink five shipping containers and build a barn on top of them must have been huge,” prosecutor Lee Bremridge stated in court. “This was a large, sophisticated cannabis growing factory with a generator providing power. This was growing on an industrial scale. The value of what it could have produced would be in the hundreds of thousands of pounds,” Bremridge said.

Palmer has received a sentence of six years and three months in jail at Exeter Crown Court.

Although cannabis was legalized in the U.K. for medical purposes last year, recreational cannabis remains prohibited.
